The antecedents of football date back to various ball games in antiquity (e.g., Cuju in China, Harpastum in Rome). The modern version consolidated in English public schools. The turning point was the foundation of the Football Association (FA) in London in 1863, which unified the rules, definitively separating association football (soccer) from rugby-football. FIFA was founded in 1904.

Football is governed by the 17 Laws of the Game by IFAB. The most distinctive rule is the offside, which penalizes an attacking player who is nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender at the moment the ball is played to them. Fouls are penalized with free kicks or penalties (if the foul occurs within the penalty area). Warnings are given with a yellow card and send-offs with a red card. The game dynamic focuses on ball possession, chance creation, and organized defense, being the only sport on this list predominantly played with the foot.
